The Best Stainless Steel Air Fryers
On most listings that phrase describes the outside of the machine. Here are the ones where it describes the part your food actually touches.

Buy the Cuisinart TOA-70. It is the only machine we track whose Amazon listing says in plain words that the cooking cavity is a "stainless steel easy-clean interior" — and in an oven-style air fryer the cavity is what your food sits in. If you want a basket rather than an oven, the Ninja Crispi is the honest answer instead: borosilicate glass, which Ninja states is free of PFAS, PTFE and nonstick coatings. The thing to know before you shop is that most air fryers sold as "stainless steel" are stainless on the outside and nonstick on the inside, and the listing will tell you so three bullets down. Prices below are pulled live from Amazon.

What "stainless steel air fryer" means on a listing
It almost always means the body panel. That is the single most useful thing to know before you spend an afternoon shopping, because the phrase does double duty: shoppers type it because they want food off a nonstick coating, and manufacturers use it because a brushed metal housing photographs better than plastic.
Two examples from machines we already cover, both read straight off the Amazon listing. Instant's 4-quart Vortex Plus has "Stainless Steel" in the product title, and a bullet further down reads "the non-stick air fryer basket make washing up effortless." Ninja's 10-quart DZ401 opens its first bullet with "Stainless steel air fryer includes 6 versatile programs" and then says "the non-stick cooking surface is made 100% PFAS free." Neither listing is lying. Both machines have stainless exteriors and coated baskets. But if you searched for a stainless steel air fryer because you wanted food on bare metal, both are the wrong answer and the title is what sold you.
There is a second, more physical reason the category works this way. A basket air fryer cooks by blasting food with fast-moving hot air in a small enclosed volume, and food in that volume sits directly on a perforated plate. Bare steel in direct contact with sugary or starchy food at 400°F welds itself to that food. The coating is not a cost-saving measure — it is what makes a basket releasable. So when a maker does sell you a genuinely uncoated cooking surface, it is almost always because the format changed: an oven cavity you put your own pan into, or a glass vessel.
The three honest formats
Once you accept the above, the field narrows to three shapes, and they are the three shapes in the table.
- An oven-style machine with a stainless cavity. Food sits on a rack, on the supplied pan, or on a sheet pan you already own. The cavity itself is steel, so there is nothing to flake. This is the Cuisinart TOA-70, and it is the only listing in our catalog that names the interior material outright.
- An oven-style machine, cavity material unstated, where you supply the pan. This is Breville and, in practice, Instant's big oven too. Neither publishes what the cavity is lined with, so we do not claim it. The reason it still answers the question is that you choose the food-contact surface — put in your own quarter-sheet pan and no coating is involved anywhere in the cook.
- Glass instead of steel. The Ninja Crispi throws out the metal basket entirely. It is the only machine here where the thing holding your food is transparent, and Ninja states plainly that the containers contain no PFAS, PTFE or nonstick coating. If "stainless" was shorthand for "no chemistry near my dinner", this is the shorter path to it.
We keep two companion pages for the adjacent material questions: best glass air fryers for the vessel question, and best ceramic air fryers for readers who are fine with a coating as long as it is not PTFE. If you have not decided which camp you are in, start with glass vs ceramic air fryers.
The picks, in order
Cuisinart TOA-70 — for the one published stainless interior
Cuisinart's own listing is the reason this is the top pick. It names the contents of the box — "an oven rack, baking pan/drip tray, air fry basket, ceramic non-stick reversible grill/griddle, and stainless steel easy-clean interior" — and that last item is the claim nobody else in the category makes in writing. The rest of the spec sheet is a competent 1,800-watt countertop oven: 0.6 cubic feet, eight functions, a dial thermostat running from Warm to 450°F, and a 60-minute timer with auto-shutoff. Cuisinart rates it for six slices of toast, 3 lb of wings, a 12-inch pizza or a 4-lb chicken.
Two honest caveats. The grill/griddle plate in the box is ceramic non-stick, so if your goal is zero coating in the kitchen, that accessory stays in a drawer and you cook on the rack or the pan. And this is a real appliance, not a gadget: 15.75 × 12.25 × 13.75 inches and 25 lb, which makes it a permanent counter resident rather than something you put away. What you get for the space is the longest warranty on this page — a limited 3-year term where most of the category gives you one.
Instant Omni Plus 19 Qt — biggest cavity, enamel instead of PTFE
The 19-quart Omni Plus is the one to buy if the real constraint is volume. Ten functions including a rotisserie spit, a stated 1,800 watts at 120 V, an adjustable 170–450°F range, and a double-layer glass door. It is rated for six slices of bread or a 12-inch pizza.
On materials, be precise about what Instant does and does not say. The "stunning stainless steel finish" in the bullets is a description of the outside. What matters more is that the tray is dishwasher-safe enamel — a fired glass-on-metal surface, which is a genuinely different thing from a sprayed PTFE or ceramic coating and has no wear layer to lose. Instant publishes no lining material for the cavity, and no warranty term we can read off the listing, so neither appears in the table. Its "95% less oil" EvenCrisp figure is a manufacturer claim and we quote it as one. If you want the smaller sibling, our Instant Vortex Plus review covers the basket model — which, as above, is nonstick inside.
Ninja Crispi — the no-coating answer in a basket shape
If an oven is more machine than you want, the Crispi is the pick, and it is the most interesting design in the category. There is no basket: a palm-sized PowerPod clamps onto one of two borosilicate glass containers — 4-quart and 6-cup — and the glass is the cooking vessel, the serving dish and the leftovers box, since both have snap-lock lids. Ninja states the containers are free of PFAS, PTFE and nonstick chemical coatings, tops out at 450°F, and gives the pod permanently fixed heat-safe feet so it does not scorch a quartz counter.
The trades are real. Ninja publishes no wattage for it, so we cannot compute its running cost the way we do elsewhere. Glass is heavier than aluminium and it will break if you drop it. And the 6-cup container, which Ninja says crisps a personal meal in seven minutes, is the one you will use most — the 4-quart is a two-person vessel, not a family one. Full detail in our Ninja Crispi review.
Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro — cook on your own steel
This is the most capable machine on the page and the most expensive, and the honest framing is that it does not answer the materials question so much as hand it to you. Breville publishes brushed stainless steel as the finish and says nothing about the cavity lining, so we make no claim about it. What it does publish is a 16 × 13.5 × 7-inch interior, which fits a standard quarter-sheet pan — your pan, your steel, no coating in the cook at all.
The engineering is the reason to spend here: five independent quartz elements under Breville's Element iQ control, a two-speed convection fan, 13 functions, an interior light, and a 2-year limited warranty. It draws 1,800 watts, so a 20-minute air-fry costs roughly 10 cents at the 17-cents-per-kWh US residential average — the same as every other 1,800-watt machine here, and a fraction of heating a wall oven. The real cost is counter space: 21.5 × 17.5 × 12.7 inches and 30 lb.
How to check a listing yourself in 30 seconds
This page covers four machines. The category has hundreds, and new ones arrive monthly, so the durable version of this advice is a reading method:
- Ignore the title. "Stainless Steel" in a product title is a colour and finish field. It is frequently the literal value of Amazon's "color" attribute.
- Search the bullets for "basket". The sentence describing the basket is where the cooking surface gets named. If it says non-stick, the basket is coated, whatever the title says.
- Treat "PFAS-free" as a different claim from "uncoated". A PFAS-free ceramic coating is still a coating with a finite life. That may be fine — it is why our ceramic roundup exists — but it is not steel. The vocabulary is unpicked in what PFAS-free actually means.
- For an oven, check the interior dimensions, not the quarts. If a quarter-sheet pan fits, you can choose your own food-contact surface and the cavity lining stops mattering.
The verdict
Buy the Cuisinart TOA-70 if you want the phrase to be true as written: it is the one listing that names a stainless interior, and it backs that with a 3-year warranty. Buy the Ninja Crispi if you wanted a basket and the real goal was no coating — glass gets you there more completely than steel would. Buy the Instant Omni Plus if you need the volume and a rotisserie. Buy the Breville if you cook enough to want five-element control and you already own good pans. And whichever direction you go, do the 30-second bullet check above before you click buy — on this particular search term, the title is the least reliable thing on the page.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a truly stainless steel air fryer basket?
Not among the basket-style machines we track. Every basket air fryer in our catalog uses a coating on the cooking surface, because bare steel sticks badly to starchy and sugary food at air-fryer temperatures. The genuinely uncoated options change format instead: an oven-style machine where you cook on a rack or your own steel pan, or a glass vessel like the Ninja Crispi.
Why do so many air fryers say stainless steel in the title?
Because the phrase describes the housing or finish, which is often the literal value of Amazon's colour attribute. Instant's 4-quart Vortex Plus has Stainless Steel in the title and a non-stick basket in the bullets; Ninja's DZ401 calls itself a stainless steel air fryer and then describes a non-stick cooking surface. Both are accurate about the outside of the machine.
Which air fryer publishes a stainless steel interior?
The Cuisinart TOA-70. Its Amazon listing says the unit includes a stainless steel easy-clean interior, which is the only explicit cavity-material claim in our catalog. Note that the reversible grill/griddle plate included in the same box is ceramic non-stick, so cook on the rack or the baking pan if you want no coating involved.
Is stainless steel safer than a PFAS-free ceramic coating?
They answer different worries. Steel and glass have no coating to wear through or flake, so there is nothing to lose over the years. A PFAS-free ceramic coating removes the fluorinated-chemistry concern but is still a layer with a finite life. If your concern is long-term wear, steel or glass wins; if your concern is specifically PFAS, a ceramic basket addresses it.
Can I use my own sheet pan in a countertop air fryer oven?
In an oven-style machine, yes, provided it fits and does not block the fan. Breville publishes a 16 by 13.5 by 7-inch interior, which takes a standard quarter-sheet pan. That is the simplest way to control exactly what your food touches, because the pan becomes the food-contact surface rather than anything the manufacturer supplied.
Is enamel the same thing as nonstick?
No. Enamel is fired glass bonded to metal, which is why Instant describes the Omni Plus tray as dishwasher-safe enamel rather than non-stick. It has no sprayed polymer wear layer, so it chips rather than peels if you abuse it with metal tools.
What does a stainless steel air fryer oven cost to run?
About 10 cents for a 20-minute cook on the 1,800-watt machines here, using the 17-cents-per-kWh US residential average. That is the same arithmetic for the Cuisinart, the Instant and the Breville, since all three publish 1,800 watts. Ninja publishes no wattage for the Crispi, so we do not estimate one.
