The Best Air Fryers for a Family of 4

Quarts are the wrong unit

Every air fryer in this category is sold on a quart number, and a quart is a measure of volume. Air frying is not a volume process. Food has to sit in a single layer for hot air to reach its underside — stack it and the pieces in the middle steam instead of crisping, which is the single most common reason a batch disappoints. What decides how much food a machine cooks at once is therefore the usable area of the basket floor, and no maker prints that.

Three makers print something better, and those figures are the backbone of this page.

• Ninja publishes pounds. The 4-quart AF101 states it fits 2 lb of French fries; the 8-quart DZ201 states up to 4 lb of fries or chicken wings. That is a usable, roughly linear anchor: double the quarts, double the food.
• Cosori publishes a whole item. The TWINFRY states that removing the divider unlocks a full 9-quart basket that fits a whole chicken.
• Typhur publishes counts and an interior height. The Dome 2 states 32 wings in 14 minutes or 2 steaks in 8, with a flat basket whose interior height it gives as 2.36 in.

Batches, not quarts: the real arithmetic

A family dinner is rarely one food. It is a protein plus a starch plus something green, and in a single-basket air fryer those are three sequential jobs. Chicken thighs take 22 minutes, potatoes take 25, broccoli takes 10 — run them one after another and the first thing you cooked has been sitting for three quarters of an hour.

This is what dual-basket machines solve, and it is a genuinely different feature from extra capacity. Ninja calls the two modes Match Cook (both zones on the same settings, effectively one double-sized batch) and Smart Finish (two different foods at two different settings, timed to finish together). Cosori calls the same pair Match and Sync; Chefman calls its version Sync Finish and states the machine does the arithmetic for you. If you cook for four, that timing feature saves more real minutes than any amount of extra volume.

The compromise a single large basket makes is the opposite: one big space, one setting, one finish time. That is the right answer if your sides come out of the oven or a pan anyway — which for a lot of households they do.

Ninja DZ201 — the published family figure

No other machine here does both. It also carries a PFAS-free ceramic coating on basket and crisper tray, which almost nothing else at this capacity publishes, and a 2-year warranty against the one-year category norm. It is 11.1 × 19 in and 11.9 in tall — narrow but deep, so measure the depth of your counter rather than the width.

Ninja DZ401 — the same idea with more room

Ten quarts, two XL baskets, and a cooking surface Ninja states is 100% PFAS-free. 13.9 × 17.1 in and 12.8 in tall at 19.8 lb, with a one-year limited warranty. Buy it over the DZ201 if you regularly cook for five or six, or if you batch-cook for the week — head to head with the rest of the format in best dual-basket air fryers.

Chefman TurboFry Touch Dual — the budget route to two zones

Nine quarts total across two baskets and 1,500 published watts, with Sync Finish. It is the widest machine here at 20 in, which is the trade for the price, and it is 16.3 lb with a one-year limited warranty. If two zones is the feature you want and the ceramic coating is not, this is the cheapest honest way to get it.

Cosori TurboBlaze — the single-basket answer

A 6-quart square basket, which holds more in a single layer than a round one of the same volume, with PFAS-free ceramic on the basket and crisper tray, a 3,600 rpm fan, a 90–450°F range and a 2-year warranty. At 11.8 × 14.4 in and 11.9 in tall it is much the smallest footprint on this page. Buy it if the oven handles your sides and you want one deep, well-made basket rather than two shallow ones.

Footprint is the thing families get wrong

Dual-basket machines are wide, and width is the dimension kitchens have least of. Published footprints for the picks, so you can measure before you buy:

All five clear a standard 18-inch counter-to-cabinet gap easily, so height is not the constraint here — depth and width are. Note also that these machines exhaust hot air from the back, so they need clearance behind them as well as beside them. What feeding four actually costs to run

Only two machines on this page publish a wattage — the Chefman at 1,500 W, and for reference the Ninja AF101 at 1,550 W. Neither Cosori, nor Ninja on the DualZone models, nor Typhur publishes one, so we compute a figure only where there is a number to compute from and say so rather than estimating the rest.

On the Chefman: 1,500 W for 25 minutes is 0.625 kWh, about 11 cents at the US average residential electricity price. That is for the whole meal across both baskets — which is the real efficiency argument for a dual-basket machine over a single one, because two sequential batches in a smaller machine cost roughly twice that and take twice as long. Machines we left off, and why

• Typhur Dome 2. The largest flat basket we track and the one with real published batch figures, but its interior height is 2.36 in — excellent for wings and steaks in a single layer, wrong for a whole chicken or a tall bake. It is our premium pick elsewhere, not the family default.
• Philips 3000 Series dual basket. A 9.5-quart two-drawer machine with a 6.3-quart large drawer and auto-sync timing, which would fit here on capacity. Left off because Philips publishes neither a wattage nor a warranty term on the listing, and this page is built on published figures.
• Instant Vortex Plus 6 Qt. A good single-basket machine at 1,700 published watts with a ClearCook window, but no warranty term is published for it and a 6-quart single basket is a one-food-at-a-time proposition for four people.

Buy the Ninja DZ201 if you want the machine with a published family quantity behind it and two zones so nothing goes cold waiting. Buy the Cosori TWINFRY if you want that plus the option of one big basket for a roast, a ceramic coating and twice the warranty. Buy the Ninja DZ401 for five or more, or for weekly batch cooking. Buy the Chefman if two zones on a budget is the whole requirement. Buy the Cosori TurboBlaze if your sides come out of the oven and you would rather have one good square basket on a small footprint.
