How Long Do Air Fryers Last?

Why there is no honest lifespan number

Search results are full of confident ranges — three years, five years, seven with care. None of them come from a manufacturer, because no manufacturer publishes one. Lifespan depends on how often the machine runs, at what temperature, how well it is cleaned and how the coating is treated, and those vary so much between households that a single figure would be meaningless even if someone had measured it.

What we can do instead is report what makers are willing to put in writing, explain which components actually fail, and be clear about which of those you can influence. That is the whole of this page, and where a figure does not exist we say so rather than inventing one.

The three things that fail

The fan bearing

An air fryer is a heating element and a fan, and the fan is the part with moving mechanical wear. Cosori publishes a 3,600 rpm fan speed on the TurboBlaze, which is the sort of figure that puts the wear in perspective — that motor spins continuously throughout every cook, in a hot cavity. A bearing that starts to go announces itself as a rising grinding or rattling noise, and it is the failure most likely to end a machine, because it is not economically repairable at these prices.

The heating element

Elements fail either abruptly or through a slow loss of heat you notice as food taking longer than it used to. Grease baked onto the element is the accelerant, and it is also the source of the burning smell people mistake for a fault. Wiping the element when it is cool is the single most neglected piece of air-fryer maintenance.

The basket coating

This is the one that usually goes first and the only one you fully control. Every basket here is coated — Ninja states the AF101 basket and crisper plate are aluminum with a nonstick ceramic coating, and Cosori states a PFAS-free ceramic coating on the TurboBlaze and the TWINFRY basket and tray. Coatings are consumable. Metal utensils, abrasive pads, the dishwasher over and over, and sharp temperature shocks all shorten their life, and a basket that has lost its coating is a machine most people replace rather than repair.

These are quoted from the current listings of the machines in our catalog. Where a listing publishes no term, we say so rather than assuming the category norm applies.

• 3 years — Cuisinart TOA-70 (limited 3-year), the longest cover of any air fryer we track.
• 2 years — Cosori TurboBlaze, Cosori Pro LE, Cosori TWINFRY, Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro (2-year limited).
• 1 year — Ninja AF101, Ninja DZ401, Ninja SP101, Ninja Crispi, Dash Compact, Chefman TurboFry Dual, Typhur Dome 2.
• Stated, no term named— Instant Omni Plus, whose warranty field contains the literal word "Warranty" and nothing else.
• No warranty published — Instant Vortex Plus 6 Qt, Instant Vortex 4 Qt, Ninja DZ201, Philips 3000 Series, BLACK+DECKER TO3217SS.

Read that ladder against price and it does not line up. The Typhur Dome 2, one of the priciest machines we track, is covered for one year; a mid-priced Cuisinart oven is covered for three. Cosori is the only brand that publishes two years consistently across its range, which is a meaningful signal in a category where one year is the norm — and it is the main reason the TurboBlaze appears in the picks above as well as on best air fryers under $100.

The other honest signal: how long it has been on sale

A warranty tells you what the maker will commit to. Time on the market tells you something the maker cannot control. The Ninja AF101 carries a release date of November 2018 on its listing and is still on sale in the same form today. A design that has stayed in the range, unchanged, for that long has had its reliability tested across a lot of kitchens and a lot of years — which is not the same as a durability rating, but it is not nothing, and it is why the AF101 remains our default recommendation in the air fryer hub despite newer machines having better specifications on paper.

What to look for if longevity is the priority

Four things, in the order they matter:

• A published warranty term. Not the presence of the word warranty — an actual number of years. Five machines we track publish none.
• Dishwasher-safe parts you do not have to put in the dishwasher. Removable basket and crisper plate make cleaning easy enough that you actually do it, which is what protects the coating and the element.
• A coating the maker describes specifically."Nonstick" is a category; "PFAS-free ceramic on basket and crisper tray", which Cosori publishes on the TurboBlaze and TWINFRY, is a specification.
• A shape you will keep using. The most common end-of-life event in this category is not mechanical. It is a machine that never fitted the counter going into a cupboard and staying there — which is why we rank on real footprint throughout.

On those criteria the picks above split cleanly. The Cuisinart TOA-70 has the longest published cover at three years, 1,800 watts and the smallest footprint of the oven-style machines we track. The Cosori TurboBlaze is the best-covered basket fryer at two years with a specified PFAS-free ceramic coating. The Cosori TWINFRY is the same warranty and coating at family capacity. The Ninja AF101 has only a one-year term, but close to eight years of continuous sale behind it and a ceramic-coated aluminum basket at the lowest price here.

The care that actually extends life

1. Clean the element, not just the basket. Unplug, let it cool completely, turn the machine over or look up into the cavity, and wipe the element and the fan guard with a damp cloth. Grease baked onto the element is what causes both smoke and slow decline.
2. Never put metal or an abrasive pad on the basket. Silicone and wood only. Coatings are the consumable part of the machine.
3. Hand wash if you can. Every basket here is dishwasher safe and every coating lasts longer if it does not go in. Warm water and a soft sponge takes a minute.
4. Leave the back and sides clear. These machines exhaust hot air rearwards. Pushed against a wall, the cavity and the fan motor both run hotter than designed.
5. Do not shock a hot basket with cold water. Thermal cycling is hard on coatings and on the bond between coating and metal.
6. Let it finish its cool-down. Some models run the fan briefly after a cook; unplugging mid-cycle leaves heat sitting in the cavity.

Repair or replace?

Honestly, replace. At these prices there is no consumer repair path for a fan bearing or an element, and out of warranty the labor alone would exceed the cost of a new machine. Two things are worth checking before you give up on one: whether the maker sells a replacement basket, which solves the most common failure for a fraction of a new machine, and whether you are still inside the term — a Cosori bought 20 months ago is still covered, where most of its competitors would not be.
