Ninja DZ201 vs DZ401
Eight quarts or ten, and the gap is not the one the model numbers imply — each machine publishes something the other leaves out.

Buy the DZ201 unless you specifically need 5-quart zones. Eight quarts split into two 4-quart zones feeds a family of four, and the DZ201 is the only one of the two whose listing states that each zone has its own cyclonic fan and rapid heater — the thing that makes "two foods, two ways" actually work. It is also the only one that publishes a temperature range (105–450°F). Step up to the DZ401 if you need two 5-quart zones, or if the two things it publishes and the DZ201 does not matter to you: a 100% PFAS-free cooking surface and a stated 1-year limited warranty. Neither publishes a wattage, so we compute no running cost for either. Prices below are pulled live from Amazon.

What actually differs
These two are the same idea at two sizes: a DualZone air fryer with two separate drawers, a Smart Finish mode that staggers two different cooks so they land at the same moment, and a Match Cook button that copies one zone's settings to the other so you can run the whole machine as a single large capacity. Both are 6-in-1: air fry, air broil, roast, bake, reheat and dehydrate. Both have dishwasher-safe crisper plates.
So the model numbers suggest the only difference is 8 quarts against 10. It is not. Read both listings side by side and each one documents something the other is silent about, which is unusual for two machines in one brand's own range and is the real reason this comparison is worth making.
Four-quart zones or five
The DZ201 is 8 quarts total, as two 4-quart zones. Ninja rates the whole machine at up to 4 lb of French fries or chicken wings. The DZ401 is 10 quarts total, as two 5-quart zones, and Ninja's headline capacity claim for it is cooking two 6-lb chickens — one per zone — which it says runs up to 30% faster than a traditional oven. Treat that 30% as Ninja's figure rather than ours; we have not timed it.
The practical translation. A 4-quart zone takes a main for two, or a side for four, in a single layer — which is what air frying needs, because stacked food steams instead of crisping. A 5-quart zone takes a main for three, or a genuinely large single item like a 6-lb bird. If your normal dinner is a protein in one drawer and a vegetable or potatoes in the other for four people, 4-quart zones are enough and the extra two quarts buys you nothing but counter depth. If you are regularly cooking for six, or you want to roast two whole chickens at once, that is the specific job the DZ401 exists for. We size the whole category in what size air fryer do I need.
One thing neither machine can do at any capacity: cook one large item. Ten quarts is still two 5-quart drawers with a wall between them, not a 10-quart space. That limit is structural to the format, and it is why the third machine on this page exists.
The spec only the DZ201 publishes
This is the finding that decides the comparison for us. The DZ201's listing contains a bullet headed SEPARATE HEATING ZONES, and it reads: "2 independent 4-quart zones have their own cooking baskets, cyclonic fans, and rapid heaters." That is a statement about the hardware, and it is the mechanism the entire DualZone promise rests on. Two foods at two different temperatures finishing together is only possible if each drawer has its own heat source and its own airflow.
The DZ401's listing makes no equivalent statement. It describes "2 independent XL air fryer baskets" and the DualZone modes, but nowhere does it say the zones have separate fans or separate heaters. We are not going to claim the DZ401 lacks them — it is a larger machine in the same range and it almost certainly works the same way. What we will say is that Ninja chose to put that sentence on one listing and not the other, and when a maker documents a mechanism on one model and goes quiet on its sibling, the documented one is the one you can hold them to.
The same asymmetry shows up on temperature. The DZ201 publishes 105°F to 450°F, which matters at both ends: 105°F is low enough to dehydrate properly, and 450°F is hot enough to sear. The DZ401 publishes no temperature range at all.
The two things only the DZ401 publishes
The asymmetry runs the other way too, and for a lot of readers these will be the deciding facts.
- A coating claim. The DZ401 states that "the non-stick cooking surface is made 100% PFAS free". The DZ201's listing says nothing about its coating in either direction. If you came to air fryers through the materials question — and on this site a great many readers do — that is a real difference in what you are being promised. It is also worth being precise about what the claim is: PFAS-free is not the same as uncoated. The vocabulary is unpicked in what PFAS-free actually means, and the machines that skip coatings entirely are in best non-toxic air fryers.
- A warranty term. The DZ401 publishes a 1-year limited warranty. The DZ201's listing publishes no warranty term we can read, so that cell in the table above is empty rather than filled with an assumption. One year is not generous — Cosori gives two on its dual-basket machine — but a stated year beats an unstated one. What actually fails on these machines, and when, is in how long do air fryers last.
The footprint inverts
Here is the part that catches people out. The bigger machine is narrower.
The DZ201 measures 15.63 inches wide × 13.86 deep × 12.4 high and weighs 17.86 lb. The DZ401 measures 13.9 wide × 17.1 deep × 12.8 high and weighs 19.8 lb. Going up two quarts makes the machine 1.7 inches narrower and 3.2 inches deeper: Ninja rotated the drawers rather than scaling the box.
Which of those you can afford depends on your kitchen, and depth is usually the binding constraint rather than width. A standard US counter is about 25 inches deep, and the back few inches are often backsplash, outlets or a tile lip. A 17.1-inch-deep machine with a drawer that pulls toward you is a serious commitment to one stretch of counter; a 15.63-inch-wide machine that is under 14 deep sits further back and leaves working space in front of it. Measure the depth you actually have before you assume the 10-quart is the upgrade. The small-footprint field is ranked in best small air fryers.
What neither publishes
Wattage. Neither listing states one, which is why there is no running-cost figure anywhere on this page. We compute electricity costs from the manufacturer's own wattage and we do not estimate it when it is missing. For context on what the machines that do publish a figure cost to run, see what an air fryer costs to run; and if the constraint is your kitchen circuit rather than your bill, the arithmetic is in can you plug an air fryer into a power strip, which also explains why the nameplate on the machine is the figure to trust.
Noise. Neither states a decibel figure. Only two air fryers in our whole catalog do, and both are single-basket machines — the quietest air fryers covers who they are. A dual-basket machine runs two fans, so it is reasonable to expect more noise than a single drawer, but nobody has published a number to compare.
The option that fixes what both of them cannot do
If what actually sent you looking at dual-basket machines was capacity rather than the two-foods trick, there is a third answer worth knowing about, and we would rather point you at it than sell you a drawer you will not use. The Cosori TWINFRY has a divider that lifts out: in place it is two 4.5-quart zones with the same sync-and-match behavior, and removed it is a single 9-quart basket that takes a whole chicken. Neither Ninja can ever be one large space.
It also publishes a PFAS-free ceramic coating on the basket and the crisper plate, and a 2-year warranty — double the DZ401's stated term. The honest counts against it: Cosori publishes no wattage either, it says nothing about per-zone heaters where the DZ201 is explicit, and it is 19 inches deep, deeper than both Ninjas. Our full write-up is the Cosori TWINFRY review, and the three-way format argument is in best dual-basket air fryers.
The verdict
Most people should buy the DZ201. Two 4-quart zones cook a main and a side for four in one round, it is the only one of the two that documents per-zone fans and heaters, it publishes a temperature range, and it takes three fewer inches of counter depth. For a family of four it is the correct machine and the cheaper one.
Buy the DZ401 for one of three specific reasons: you need 5-quart zones because you cook for six or roast whole birds; you want the published PFAS-free coating claim, which the DZ201 does not make; or you want a stated warranty term rather than an unstated one. Those are real reasons and we would not talk you out of them — just do not pay for them thinking you are also getting better-documented engineering, because on the evidence each listing offers, you are not.
And if the honest answer is that you wanted the capacity rather than the two-zone trick, buy the TWINFRY instead and get a basket that can become one big one. Where this whole format fits against a single large drawer is covered in best air fryers for a family of 4.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Ninja DZ201 and DZ401?
Capacity and documentation. The DZ201 is 8 quarts as two 4-quart zones; the DZ401 is 10 quarts as two 5-quart zones. Beyond size, the DZ201 is the only one that states each zone has its own cyclonic fan and rapid heater and publishes a 105 to 450°F range, while the DZ401 is the only one that states a 100% PFAS-free cooking surface and a 1-year limited warranty.
Is the DZ401 worth the extra money over the DZ201?
Only for a specific need: 5-quart zones for a household of six or for roasting whole chickens, the published PFAS-free coating claim, or a stated warranty term. For a family of four cooking a main and a side together, the DZ201's 4-quart zones do the same job for less and take up less counter depth.
Is the 10-quart Ninja bigger on the counter than the 8-quart?
Deeper but narrower, which surprises people. The DZ201 is 15.63 inches wide and 13.86 deep; the DZ401 is 13.9 wide and 17.1 deep. Ninja rotated the drawers rather than scaling the box, so the larger machine claims 3.2 more inches of depth and gives back 1.7 inches of width.
Do both Ninja DualZone air fryers have separate heating elements?
The DZ201's listing says so explicitly: two independent zones with their own baskets, cyclonic fans and rapid heaters. The DZ401's listing makes no equivalent statement. We will not claim the DZ401 lacks them, but only one of the two has that mechanism in writing.
How much do the Ninja DualZone air fryers cost to run?
We cannot say, because Ninja publishes no wattage for either model. We compute running costs from a manufacturer's stated wattage and do not estimate one when it is missing. The nameplate on the underside of the machine carries the figure if you need it.
Can either model cook one large item instead of two small ones?
No. Ten quarts is two 5-quart drawers with a wall between them, not a single 10-quart space, so neither machine fits anything bigger than one drawer. If that is what you need, the Cosori TWINFRY's divider lifts out to make a single 9-quart basket.
Which Ninja DualZone has the better warranty?
The DZ401, by default: it publishes a 1-year limited warranty and the DZ201 publishes no term we can read. One year is short for the category - Cosori states two years on its dual-basket machine - but a stated year is better than an unstated one.
